5 Lesson - Advanced Beatmatching
The Anatomy Of DJing

18m
In the 5th lesson, we take a thorough look at the mechanics of beatmatching. Building on previous exercises, we move beyond metronome practice and begin working with actual tracks. You'll need two tracks, preferably with a strong kick drum on the first beat and a simple, even start. Setting up the master track on one deck, you'll learn to identify musical phrases, use cue points, and practice synchronized starts.
We explore time signatures and rhythmic structure, understanding the difference between strong and weak beats and why "4 to the floor" is central to dance music. A series of exercises follows, designed to strengthen your timing, cueing, and beatmatching skills. You’ll cue to strong beats, practice precise starts, and synchronize records using pitch and phase adjustments. For digital DJs, tips on using cue buttons and jog wheels for accurate phase alignment are provided.
By the end of this lesson, you'll have foundational beatmatching skills, enabling smooth transitions and precise rhythmic control.
